2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC: Unveiling the Supercharged Beast (2026)

Get ready for a thrilling ride as we unveil the 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC, a supercharged sensation that's set to take the automotive world by storm! But here's the catch: this powerful pony car might just be a US-exclusive, leaving Aussie car enthusiasts yearning for more.

Ford has unveiled a new, turbocharged Dark Horse SC variant of the Mustang, equipped with a version of the 5.2-liter supercharged 'Predator' V8 from the mighty Mustang GTD. However, due to pricing concerns and Australia's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), it's highly unlikely that this beast will make its way down under, even if produced in right-hand drive.

A Ford Australia spokesperson confirmed, "We have no plans to offer the Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC in Australia."

Now, let's talk numbers. The standard Dark Horse starts at $98,017 before on-road costs in Australia, while the GTD retails for a whopping US$328,000 (A$489,600) in the US. So, you can expect the SC to carry a price tag of over $200,000, including Luxury Car Tax, if it were to be sold in Australia.

The new Dark Horse SC boasts similar specs to the previous-generation Mustang Shelby GT500, featuring a version of the GTD's blown V8. This engine produces an astonishing 608kW of power and 900Nm of torque, making it a force to be reckoned with.

Under the hood, the V8 is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, a step up from the eight-speed DCT in the GTD. The GTD, essentially a street-legal version of Ford's Mustang GT3 race car, boasts advanced carbon-fiber aerodynamics and a rear-mounted transaxle for optimal weight distribution.

For reference, the standard Mustang Dark Horse's 5.0-liter Coyote V8 produces 350kW and 550Nm in Australia, while the old GT500 with a seven-speed DCT generated a massive 567kW/847Nm, making it the most powerful road-going Ford during its US availability from 2020 to 2022.

The Mustang Dark Horse comes standard with Ford's MagneRide adaptive damping system, firmer springs, revised anti-roll bars, upgraded front and rear knuckles, and modified front control arms. It also features a lightweight magnesium strut tower brace under the hood, enhancing steering precision and reducing unsprung mass.

In terms of design, the Dark Horse SC sports a new front fascia with a 65% larger central opening and double-sized side inlets compared to the standard Dark Horse, improving engine airflow and brake cooling. It also boasts a new rear diffuser, and Ford claims its new aluminum bonnet generates 2.5 times the downforce of the regular Dark Horse with the rain tray removed.

A Track Package will be available in the US, offering 20-inch carbon-fiber wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, a specific MagneRide calibration, and carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes from the GTD, measuring 16.5 inches up front and 14.5 inches at the rear.

The carbon wheels and ceramic brakes reduce the Track Pack version's weight by 68kg, and it also features a rear storage shelf instead of rear seats. The Track Pack includes the GTD's variable traction control system with five intervention levels, including a setting for no intervention at all. It also replaces the SC's standard rear deck lid with a ducktail-style unit, working in harmony with an upgraded carbon-fiber rear wing to further increase downforce.

The regular Dark Horse SC features the GTD's leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel with Alcantara and carbon-fiber accents. It also offers the Track Pack's standard leather and Dinamica-trimmed Recaro sport seats.

A Teal Accent Package, adding unique colored brake calipers, seat belts, and badges, will be available for the Dark Horse SC Track Package. Meanwhile, a Carbon Exterior Package adds carbon accents to the front fascia and mirrors.

A limited-run Track Pack Special Edition will also be offered in the US, combining the Track and Carbon packages and featuring a black roof, Race Red Brembo calipers, Solar Red accents for the Recaro seats, and the option of exclusive Shadow Black or Oxford White exterior paint.

Chief engineer Arie Groeneveld described the Mustang Dark Horse SC as "a high-powered Mustang that I don't think the world saw coming, but it is exactly what happens when you let racing engineers design a road car."

The latest S650-generation Mustang was Australia's top-selling sports car in 2025, outselling its nearest competitor, the BMW 2 Series Coupe, almost four-to-one, with over 4000 sales - a massive 177% increase from 2024.

So, what do you think? Is the Dark Horse SC a must-have for Aussie car enthusiasts, or is it a missed opportunity? Let us know in the comments!
