In a move that aims to turn around North Carolina's football fortunes, Bill Belichick has hired an experienced offensive coordinator, Bobby Petrino. This appointment has sparked excitement and intrigue among UNC fans, but it's also a controversial choice with a unique backstory.

He achieved great success as Louisville's head coach, leading the team to a 41-9 record from 2003 to 2006. However, his first NFL head coaching stint with the Atlanta Falcons ended abruptly with a 3-10 record and his resignation mid-season to take up a role at Arkansas.
Petrino's time at Arkansas was also marked by controversy, as he was fired in 2012 following a scandal. Despite this, he went on to have successful stints at Western Kentucky and Louisville before taking on offensive coordinator roles at UNLV, Texas A&M, and Arkansas again. In 2025, he served as interim head coach for the Razorbacks, but the team went winless during his tenure.
Now, at 64 years old, Petrino joins UNC's staff, tasked with improving an offense that averaged a meager 183.5 passing yards and 19.2 points per game in 2025. Belichick, 73, is hoping Petrino's experience will bring a much-needed boost to the Tar Heels.
