In a stunning turn of events, the Denver Broncos will have to navigate the postseason without their starting quarterback, Bo Nix. Late in an intense overtime clash, which ended with a nail-biting 33-30 victory against the Buffalo Bills, Nix sustained a fracture to his right ankle. As confirmed by Head Coach Sean Payton, Nix is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, which will effectively end his season.
"He’s incredibly resilient," Payton remarked about Nix’s character. The coach went on to highlight Nix's impressive achievement, stating, "I told him, 'You’re only the second quarterback in history during your second year to lead your team to a championship game—only Mahomes has done it before you.' This season has been challenging, with key players frequently sidelined, but we are prepared to rise to this next obstacle and move forward."
With Nix out, veteran quarterback Jarrett Stidham is set to take the helm as the starter for the AFC Championship Game, which is scheduled for Sunday, January 25. Meanwhile, Sam Ehlinger will step in as the backup quarterback for the Broncos.
Payton expressed confidence in Stidham’s readiness, saying, "Given what little we've seen so far, I can assure you he’s prepared. At the beginning of the season, I remarked that I believe I have a backup capable of starting for numerous teams, and Stidham shares that belief." He added a note of caution, saying, "Keep an eye on him; he brings experience from previous games, and while our quarterbacks each have unique styles, Stidham is ready to shine."
Nix made history by joining John Elway as one of the few quarterbacks in Broncos history to throw for three touchdowns in a single postseason win, marking a significant milestone in his two-year career where he started all 36 games to date.
Stidham, who has started four games throughout his career, secured a victory in his last home game earlier in 2023, showcasing his capability despite limited playing time.
Payton reflected on the emotional journey ahead for the team, stating, "There will be a wave of emotions after losing Bo, but we will quickly focus back on the task at hand. We celebrated our achievements with Nix, and now it's time for Stidham to step up. We are ready for the challenge that lies ahead."
