And this is the part most people miss: The MUA argues that Carnival exploits legal loopholes to employ foreign crew, exempting them from Australian labor laws. Burford passionately highlights the irony, "...paying Australian fares, but immune from Australian law." He further alleges that Carnival exploits workers from impoverished countries, paying them meager wages and subjecting them to unacceptable conditions while raking in massive profits.
The inspection focuses on crew reports of skin infections due to cramped living spaces, contaminated water, and the appalling practice of forcing sick crew members to work, even with serious illnesses. The MUA believes these issues are not isolated incidents but systemic problems within the cruise industry. They emphasize that while guests indulge in luxury, crew members from developing nations endure substandard living and working conditions.
"The truth behind the glamour is revealed," says Jamie Newlyn, Assistant National Secretary of MUA. He urges everyone to consider the harsh realities faced by the crew who keep the ships running and generate substantial profits for cruise companies.
