Revenge is indeed a sweet experience, especially when it unfolds on a chilly winter night at Ashton Gate. Last Friday, the Bristol Bears not only sought retribution for their disheartening 38-0 loss to the Sale Sharks from over a year ago but also marked their fourth consecutive victory in the Premiership, temporarily elevating them to the top of the league standings. However, this triumph did not come without significant challenges and required considerable patience from Pat Lam's team.
The match between these two teams often brings out the best performances, and this occasion was no different. Although Alex Sanderson's Sale Sharks have had a season filled with mixed results, they nearly managed to build on their Boxing Day win against Harlequins, showcasing a fierce defensive effort combined with exceptional control from George Ford.
Bristol's breakthrough did not occur until the 74th minute, when Tom Jordan, who proved to be their standout player throughout the contest, successfully converted a try by Kalaveti Ravouvou. This pivotal moment allowed the home side to recover from a ten-point deficit during the second half.
Initially, Sale had taken a commanding lead of 17-7, thanks to tries from Tom O’Flaherty and Ernst van Rhyn, along with a penalty from Ford. However, Bristol showcased remarkable resilience, with Jordan spearheading their comeback. They managed to score tries through Matias Moroni and Ravouvou, adding to Joe Owen’s first-half effort.
The first half was quite compelling, as Sale's defense was relentless, particularly under the leadership of Tom Curry. The British and Irish Lions flanker was phenomenal, engaging in a personal battle with Bristol’s Ellis Genge that overshadowed his earlier controversial tackle on Argentina’s Juan Cruz Mallia during a November 2025 match.
Bristol started strong, dominating in the scrums with Genge providing a tough challenge for Sale's prop James Harper. However, they struggled to maintain pace against Sale’s quick line speed and aggressive approach. With Ford continuing to send spiraling kicks towards the Bristol backline, Sale's Raffi Quirke made an impressive impact after stepping in as a left-wing replacement for Alex Wills, who had to leave the field due to a head injury assessment following a high tackle.
Quirke's outstanding performance fueled the argument that his versatility could allow England to utilize a seven-one substitute strategy in future matches. The tone of the game was set early on; after a few phases of play, Ford launched a high kick that nearly resulted in a try, only for Joe Carpenter to fumble the ball.
While Bristol had their chances, they lacked the necessary precision to apply sustained pressure. As a result, Sale's confidence grew, and they gradually began to dominate the match. The opening try encapsulated this dynamic perfectly: it started with Bristol on the offensive, but after a turnover caused by a deep attack, Sale seized the moment ruthlessly.
With Quirke leading a counter-attack paired with a powerful run from Luke Cowan-Dickie, Rekeiti Ma’asi-White managed to escape a strong tackle by Jordan to set up O’Flaherty for a try along the right touchline in the 18th minute.
Sale nearly scored again shortly after, with Quirke recovering loose possession following another high kick from Ford that caused Moroni, filling in at full-back, to make a mistake. Although Ford's attempted drop goal fell short, the growing frustration among the Ashton Gate crowd was finally alleviated when Owen scored a try under the posts after several close-range drives.
Ironically, this score stemmed from yet another high ball from Ford, during which Carpenter was penalized for being offside just as the kick bypassed the Bristol back three. Benefiting from the ensuing penalty, Bristol was able to maintain sustained pressure within Sale's 22, leading to Owen’s try.
Just when it appeared that Bristol might take control, Sale regained their footing after halftime. Van Rhyn scored a try with confirmation from the TMO that he had grounded the ball despite being held up initially. Ford's conversion and subsequent penalty extended Sale’s lead to ten points, suggesting they might achieve their first away victory of the league season.
However, Bristol was not ready to give up, responding with a well-executed try by Moroni in the right corner, crafted through a beautifully orchestrated move led by fly-half Tom Jordan. As the pressure mounted, Ma’asi-White received a yellow card for not rolling away from a ruck after another surge from Moroni. Bristol opted to kick to the corner, but once again, their accuracy faltered, resulting in a knock-on by Benjamin Grondona deep in Sale’s territory.
Eventually, Bristol's numerical advantage played a significant role when Jordan charged up the middle, leading the team to switch their offensive strategy leftward. Benhard Janse van Rensburg found Genge, who delivered a pass to Ravouvou that appeared slightly forward but was permitted, allowing the try to stand. Jordan’s successful conversion nudged Bristol into the lead for the very first time in the match at the 74th minute.
After Ma’asi-White returned from the sin bin, Sale attempted to regain their momentum, but Bristol remained steadfast, showcasing their determination to preserve their lead.
