Imagine a future where household chores, like doing laundry, are handled effortlessly by robots—sounds exciting, right? At this year's CES, humanoid robots seemed poised to become an integral part of our daily lives. LG unveiled CLOiD, a smart robot designed to assist with various tasks, from cooking meals to loading washing machines. In addition, SwitchBot showcased the Onero H1, another innovative household helper aimed at simplifying routine activities. Meanwhile, industry leaders like Boston Dynamics, WIRobotics, and Zeroth presented even more remarkable humanoid robots, each promising to revolutionize how we manage our homes.
With advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence, these machines are becoming increasingly intelligent and capable. However, the pressing question remains: are they truly equipped to take over our household chores? While we already have robotic devices that can vacuum floors and cut grass, there's still one significant task they struggle with—laundry.
Laundry is a multifaceted chore that many would gladly delegate to a robot: it involves collecting clothes, sorting them by color and fabric type, loading and unloading the washer, folding, and finally, transporting the clean items. During CES, nearly every exhibitor claimed their household robot could tackle these tasks, showcasing demonstrations where bots were seen efficiently loading washers and folding garments.
To verify these claims, The Verge took on the challenge of testing these robots at the event. We wanted to discover if these machines genuinely possess the capabilities they advertise or if the future of home robotics might actually lie with smaller, task-specific devices, which were also prevalent at CES.
Join Jennifer Pattison Tuohy, our senior smart home reviewer, as she embarks on an exploration to determine how close we are to having a robot that can handle laundry. Throughout her journey, she engages with influential figures such as the president of Roborock, a major player in the vacuum sector, and the CEO of Zeroth, a cutting-edge humanoid startup. Together, they delve into whether the trend of humanoid robots is a natural progression or merely another instance of CES hype.
