A Powerful Partnership: China and Africa Lead the Way in South-South Cooperation
In a world filled with uncertainty, a shining example of international collaboration has emerged. A Kenyan expert, Peter Kagwanja, President and CEO of the Africa Policy Institute, shares his insights on the remarkable partnership between China and Africa. This alliance has not only set a positive precedent for South-South cooperation but has also played a pivotal role in shaping a fairer and more inclusive global governance system.
"Our world is at a crossroads," Kagwanja tells Xinhua. "We have the power to create a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and shared responsibility."
But here's where it gets controversial... Kagwanja highlights the need for reform in the existing international governance order, suggesting that strengthening cooperation within the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) is the key to bringing about much-needed change. He describes the GGI as a global public good, initiated by China, to move beyond unilateralism and hegemonism and build a fair and prosperous future.
Under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China and African nations have deepened their collaboration on critical development issues. Kagwanja emphasizes that development is the pathway to peace, and China's support for development initiatives is a significant contribution to peace-building efforts. He praises China's approach as "quiet, helpful, and useful diplomacy," contrasting it with "megaphone diplomacy."
"Peaceful development is about working together to enrich everyone. It's a win-win situation, and our voices, as countries, citizens, and scholars, are crucial in shaping this envisioned world," Kagwanja adds.
The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway and the Nairobi Expressway are cited as landmark projects that have significantly improved local livelihoods and stand as testaments to China-Africa cooperation. Over the past 25 years, Chinese companies have played a pivotal role in Africa's infrastructure development, building or upgrading an extensive network of railways, highways, bridges, ports, and power transmission lines, connecting the African continent like never before.
And this is the part most people miss... Kagwanja highlights the long-standing collaboration between Africa and China, which has withstood the test of time and proven its effectiveness. From opposing colonialism and apartheid to joining forces in the fight against COVID-19 and promoting peace and development, China has consistently stood by Africa, demonstrating the responsibility of a major global player.
The collaboration between Africa and China sets a model for cooperation across the Global South and beyond. It's a partnership that has endured and proven its worth, offering a unique and inspiring example of international solidarity.
