South Africa's ODI hopes have taken a hit as rising star Dewald Brevis has been ruled out of the upcoming series against Pakistan due to injury. This news undoubtedly stings, especially for a team already navigating a few challenges.
Brevis suffered a low-grade shoulder muscle strain during the third T20I match held in Lahore on Saturday. The young batter, who was a part of all matches during the tour of Pakistan, will now focus on rehabilitation while staying with the team in Pakistan. This is crucial as South Africa prepares for their tour of India later this month, which includes two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is.
But here's where it gets controversial... While Brevis's absence is a blow, South Africa hasn't yet announced a replacement. Before the injury, Brevis's highest score across six innings in Tests and T20Is was 54, achieved in the second innings at Gaddafi Stadium. His ODI career hasn't exactly exploded either, with 110 runs in six matches and a best of 49. However, he's still highly regarded. Temba Bavuma even praised Brevis's ability to perform well even on challenging pitches.
Brevis's injury adds to South Africa's woes in the ODI series. They chose to rest key players like Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada for the limited-overs leg. They have also been affected by injuries to Kwena Maphaka and Anrich Nortje, weakening the squad further. Matthew Breetzke, who only debuted earlier this year, will captain the ODI side and might lean heavily on Quinton de Kock, who is returning to 50-over cricket after reversing his retirement.
The upcoming ODI series will be played in Faisalabad, which hasn't hosted men's international cricket since 2008. This series follows a Test series draw (1-1) and Pakistan's victory in the T20I series (2-1). South Africa's tour of India begins with the first Test on November 14.
What do you think? Will Brevis's absence significantly impact South Africa's chances in the ODI series? Do you think the team has enough depth to compensate for the loss? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
