The iconic Princes Street undergoes a dramatic transformation!
In a move that has left many Edinburgers stunned, the former Next store on Princes Street has been completely demolished, making way for an ambitious new development. But here's where it gets controversial...
While some may lament the loss of a familiar landmark, this project aims to breathe new life into the heart of the city. The Edinburgh Council has granted planning permission for a luxurious hotel, promising to preserve the historical essence of the area while adding a modern twist.
The development, estimated at a whopping £100 million, will see the construction of a 347-bed hotel, complete with a bar, rooftop terrace, restaurant, and retail spaces. And this is the part most people miss: the architects, 3DReid and Hunter REIM, assure us that the new structure will blend seamlessly with the neighboring properties, respecting the city's rich history.
As construction vehicles busy themselves with the rubble, we can't help but wonder: is this a step towards revitalizing Princes Street, or a controversial move that may divide opinions?
Andrew Moffat, Managing Director of Hunter REIM, believes it's a transformative development, especially for the western end of the street. He says, "Developing in a world heritage site is always challenging, but we are confident this will be a proud moment for everyone."
Julian Mors, Group Director Development at Ruby, adds, "Edinburgh's hotel market offers immense potential, especially in the affordable luxury segment. We're thrilled to bring our concept to Scotland."
So, what do you think? Is this a necessary evolution for Princes Street, or a step too far? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
