Endangered Giraffe Calf: A New Hope at Whipsnade Zoo (2026)

An Endangered Giraffe's New Life: A Story of Resilience and Hope

An endangered reticulated giraffe calf has been born at Whipsnade Zoo, bringing new hope for the species. This birth is particularly significant as it comes just months after the death of her father, Bashu, who passed away due to kidney failure in October. Despite the tragedy, the mother, Luna, has proven to be a remarkable and attentive mother, giving birth to her fifth calf.

The calf was born during the recent Leonid meteor shower, adding a touch of celestial wonder to the event. Zoo members will decide on a name with a suitable celestial theme, and the winner will be announced in the coming days. The calf, standing at about two meters (6.5 feet) tall at birth, joins her siblings, Myra and Timba, in the giraffe herd, which now numbers five.

Connor Corrigan, team leader of large hoofstock at Whipsnade Zoo, expressed his delight at the calf's well-being. He noted that the calf is happy, healthy, and energetic, taking her first steps within an hour of birth and exploring her surroundings with her long legs. Luna's nurturing nature is evident as she cares for her fifth calf, demonstrating her experience as a mother.

The reticulated giraffe is an endangered species, with fewer than 16,000 individuals remaining in the wild. They are native to the grasslands of Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya, and newborns typically stand at around two meters tall. Whipsnade Zoo's efforts in breeding and caring for these giraffes contribute to the conservation of this vulnerable species, offering a glimmer of hope for their future.
