Downtown Sault Ste. Marie Expands: A New Era of Development
Sault Ste. Marie's downtown area is undergoing a significant transformation, with a new committee taking the reins and expanding its boundaries. The city's downtown development committee, established by the city council, has taken over from the former Downtown Association, marking a new chapter in the city's urban development.
The previous boundaries, defined by a one-kilometre stretch of Queen Street from Gore to East Street, are now being redefined. Josh Ingram, a city staffer who attended a committee meeting, revealed the proposed new boundaries: from Huron Street to the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, and from the waterfront to Albert Street. This expansion aims to encompass a more diverse and vibrant part of the city.
One interesting consideration was extending the boundaries to Wellington Street, but the committee ultimately decided against it due to the lack of businesses in that area. The committee is also focusing on other priorities, such as updating the downtown's visual identity. The Downtown Association's logo, introduced just last year, is being replaced by the city's 2019 visual identity and colours, which has sparked some debate.
The original logo, designed to resemble the International Bridge and a medicine wheel, faced criticism for its unique but somewhat controversial appearance, likened to a sliced pizza or a basketball. Even Mayor Matthew Shoemaker, who was a Ward 3 councillor at the time, initially opposed it. However, the new logo and branding will reflect the city's official visual identity, ensuring a cohesive and modern image.
The committee has identified five key priorities for their work: downtown events, communications, cleanliness and neighbourhood upkeep, safety, and economic health, including addressing store vacancies. Additionally, committee member André Riopel, an advocate for human-powered transportation, has proposed converting excess parking lots into new housing developments, aiming to promote sustainable living and urban growth.
This expansion and new focus on downtown development signal a significant shift in Sault Ste. Marie's urban landscape, offering exciting opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
