In a shocking turn of events, Georgia Swimming Inc., which is one of the 59 Local Swim Committees (LSCs) affiliated with USA Swimming, is currently under investigation by law enforcement due to allegations of misappropriation of funds. This situation has raised significant concerns within the swimming community and beyond.
On November 23, General Chair Lucas Curotto Ferreira communicated to the members in a letter that a volunteer made a discovery suggesting possible misuse of LSC funds. Following this alarming finding, a group of Executive Board members consulted experts to assess the data, which ultimately led to the emergence of "strong evidence of malfeasance." This revelation has undoubtedly put the organization in a precarious position.
At that time, Ferreira informed the membership that the issue had been handed over to law enforcement authorities. Just recently, he confirmed to SwimSwam that the investigation is active and that the case will soon be presented to a grand jury, although no specific timeline for this process has been established.
In response to these troubling findings, the LSC has initiated a review of its operational practices to prevent such incidents from occurring again in the future. "The Board of Directors and our Governance Committee are now engaged in reviewing our practices and putting in place guardrails which should help prevent this in the future," Ferreira stated in his November correspondence to members.
Moreover, he emphasized the LSC's dedication to maintaining transparency throughout the investigation, assuring members that the findings would be shared once everything concludes.
It’s worth noting that the LSC also addressed potential disruptions in some administrative functions, particularly those tied to billing, which might experience delays in the coming months due to the ongoing situation.
For context, Georgia Swimming operated on an estimated budget of $335,000 in 2025 and has approved a larger operating budget of $386,062 for 2026, expecting around $365,726 in revenue. In early December 2025, Georgia Swimming hosted the Senior State Championships, where SwimAtlanta triumphed, winning both the boys' and girls' team titles. Looking ahead, the Age Group State Championships are scheduled to take place from February 20-22 at the Columbus Aquatic Center.
