The Land of the Rising Sun is experiencing a streaming boom! With a staggering $7.2 billion in revenue generated from premium video-on-demand services in 2025, Japan's streaming market is on fire. But here's where it gets controversial: three major players control half of this lucrative pie.

Netflix leads the pack with a 22% market share, while Prime Video boasts the most subscribers at 19.3 million, thanks to its seamless integration with retail and e-commerce operations. Local productions are the real stars here, accounting for a massive 80% of all streaming hours. Animation, in particular, shines bright with "Spy x Family" topping the charts in Q4 2025. Japanese live-action series and variety shows dominate TVer's AVOD programming, while Netflix and Amazon deliver their own original hits like "Last Samurai Standing" and "The Golden Combi." American content still finds its audience, with 28% of users tuning into U.S. series and films like "Wicked" and "A Minecraft Movie."

The future of Japan's streaming market looks eventful. Major platforms are prioritizing live event programming, with Netflix entering the sports arena by securing exclusive rights to the 2026 World Baseball Classic. TVer plans to broadcast select competitions from the 2026 Winter Olympics, and U-Next is expanding its sports coverage to include women's golf majors and English Premier League soccer through 2028.

"Japan's premium VOD market has hit a critical milestone," says Dhivya T, lead analyst at MPA. "Growth is now driven by sophisticated monetization strategies, including ad-supported tiers, telco bundling, and vertically integrated ecosystems. The next phase of competition will focus on event-driven engagement and premium local content."
