A missed opportunity and a personal regret: Jon Jones reflects on the fight that got away.
In a recent podcast interview, Jones opened up about his career and the one fight he wishes he could have had. Despite an impressive resume, Jones admits to a lingering fear and a sense of relief regarding a potential match against Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson.
Jones, a UFC legend, has an extensive record of victories over some of the sport's greatest names. From Andrew Gusmao to Daniel Cormier, his light heavyweight reign was nothing short of historic. But it was the fight that never happened that haunts him the most.
"I missed out on sharing the ring with a true human being," Jones said, referring to Johnson. "He was respectful, yet scary. A unique combination that made him stand out."
But here's where it gets controversial...
The two were initially scheduled to face off at UFC 187 in 2015. However, a hit-and-run incident involving Jones led to his indefinite suspension and the stripping of his light heavyweight title. Despite the prank-filled press conference, where Jones and Johnson playfully shoved each other, the fight never materialized.
And this is the part most people miss...
Jones, in a surprising twist, expressed relief at the turn of events. "I was glad I got in trouble," he admitted. "Johnson intimidated me, and that's saying something."
The fight never happened, and Johnson passed away in 2022. Jones' words leave us with a thought-provoking question: Was this fear justified, or did Jones miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?
