Imagine this: Your favorite local golf course is declared the worst in the entire country. That's the reality for the Leo J. Martin Golf Course in Weston, Massachusetts, and it's sparking a major $5 million renovation plan.
This isn't just any course; it's a state-operated municipal course nestled along the scenic Charles River. But according to recent rankings, the course has seen better days. The state's Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is stepping in with a comprehensive plan to revitalize the course.
So, what's on the agenda? The proposed upgrades are extensive, aiming to address the course's current condition. The improvements include a brand-new irrigation system, significant landscaping enhancements, improvements to the greens, strategic tree planting, and upgrades to the cart paths. A DCR spokesperson confirmed these details, highlighting the scope of the project.
But here's where it gets controversial... To facilitate these much-needed upgrades, the course will have to close for the entire 2026 season. However, there's a silver lining: the driving range will remain open, welcoming golfers from April through the season. The DCR is also recommending an alternative course, Ponkapoag Golf Course in Canton, for players seeking a nearby public course during the closure. The Leo J. Martin course is expected to reopen in April 2027.
During the renovation, the DCR plans to continue regular maintenance, including deep tine and core aerification, plug removal, sand-compost top dressing, turf seed slicing, and green rolling.
To ensure the project aligns with player expectations, the DCR has appointed a new director of golf course maintenance. This individual is actively gathering feedback from players and other stakeholders, ensuring their voices are heard in the planning process.
