A shocking food hygiene report has led to swift action at a luxury North Wales resort, leaving many wondering about the standards we expect when we go on holiday.
Lyons Holiday Parks, a major player in the holiday industry with over 20 sites across North Wales and Cumbria, found itself in hot water after a recent inspection of The Marian Resort and Spa in Dyserth. This resort, which reopened in March 2024 after a multi-million pound renovation, was initially awarded a five-star food hygiene rating. However, an unannounced inspection in October revealed some serious issues.
The inspection uncovered a series of concerning problems, including food deemed unfit for consumption, high-risk items past their expiration dates, and dirty equipment. But that's not all. Inspectors also noted areas that hadn't been cleaned properly, a significant fly infestation in a dry-stores area, and structural issues like holes in internal walls and gaps in external pipes. This led to the resort's food hygiene rating plummeting to zero, with warnings of potential enforcement action.
In response, Lyons Holiday Parks took what they called "immediate and decisive action." This included dismissing senior kitchen staff and management. A spokesperson emphasized the company's commitment to preventing a recurrence of the situation. They stated, "We take food safety and hygiene incredibly seriously, and we acknowledge the concerns raised in the recent council inspection. The rating received does not reflect the standards we expect or the experience we strive to provide for our guests."
To rectify the situation, the resort implemented a comprehensive action plan in collaboration with environmental health officers. This plan involved:
- Removing all non-compliant items.
- Deep-cleaning and sanitizing all kitchen and food-handling areas.
- Servicing equipment and improving maintenance schedules.
- Introducing enhanced pest-control measures.
- Retraining all team members in food hygiene and food safety management.
- Strengthening internal monitoring procedures.
The resort has since undergone follow-up visits from the local authority and is working to regain its five-star rating. The spokesperson added, "The health and safety of our guests and staff is our top priority, and we remain fully committed to maintaining the highest possible hygiene standards across all of our venues."
But here's where it gets controversial: While the company has taken steps to address the issues, the fact remains that a luxury resort was operating below acceptable hygiene standards. Do you think the actions taken were sufficient, or should more have been done? What does this incident make you think about food safety standards in the hospitality industry?
