Ohio's Most Stocked Fish: The Saugeye Story (2026)

Ohio's waters are teeming with life, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Ohio Division of Wildlife! But here's a surprising fact: the most stocked fish in the state is not a native species.

A Hybrid's Dominance:
The saugeye, a crossbreed of walleye and sauger, takes the crown as Ohio's most stocked fish. In 2025, over 13 million saugeye fry and 4.8 million fingerlings were released into various bodies of water across the state. This hybrid fish has been a staple in Ohio's reservoirs since the mid-1990s, thriving in these environments.

Hatchery Operations:
The Ohio Division of Wildlife manages six hatcheries, categorizing their stocked fish into five size groups: fry, fingerlings, advanced fingerlings, yearlings, and catchable size. Each category ensures the fish are released at the optimal stage for survival and growth.

Controversial Sterilization:
But here's where it gets controversial. The state released over 665,000 triploid saugeye, a sterile variant created through pressure shock treatment. This technique adds a third set of chromosomes, preventing the fish from reproducing. These sterile saugeye were strategically released into Grand Lake St. Marys to avoid interbreeding with walleye in Lake Erie.

A Balancing Act:
Interestingly, Ohio doesn't stock certain fish like largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, or walleye, as their populations are self-sustaining. The state also refrains from stocking Lake Erie directly, opting to release steelhead into rivers that eventually flow into the lake.

A Diverse Aquatic Ecosystem:
In addition to saugeye, Ohio's 2025 stocking efforts included various species like walleye, yellow perch, hybrid-striped bass, and several types of catfish. The state aims to offer a diverse range of fishing opportunities for its nearly 827,000 licensed anglers.

So, what do you think about the state's approach to fish stocking? Is the sterilization of certain species a necessary conservation measure, or does it raise ethical concerns? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
