A nearly blind, non-English-speaking refugee from Myanmar has died just days after being released by federal immigration authorities, sparking outrage and calls for accountability.
Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a 56-year-old man with severe visual impairments, was found dead on February 24th, nearly six miles from a coffee shop where US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had left him. But here's where it gets even more troubling: temperatures in Buffalo had been plummeting below freezing, and the coffee shop where he was dropped off had already closed for the night. And this is the part most people miss: Shah Alam's family claims they were never informed of his release or location, leaving him utterly alone in a foreign environment.
Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan didn't hold back, calling the incident 'deeply disturbing' and demanding a thorough investigation. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees CBP, has defended its actions, stating that Shah Alam accepted a ride to the coffee shop—a location they deemed 'warm and safe'—and showed no signs of distress. But is leaving a vulnerable, non-English-speaking individual at a closed business in freezing temperatures ever truly 'safe'? That's a question many are now asking.
The Washington Post released a video from outside the Tim Horton's coffee shop, timestamped February 19th, which appears to show Shah Alam walking past but not entering the establishment. The shop closes at 7:00 PM, and weather reports indicate temperatures that night were around 36°F (2.2°C). Was this a recipe for disaster? Some would argue yes.
Shah Alam's cause of death remains undisclosed, but the circumstances surrounding his final days are raising serious concerns. Before his death, he had spent nearly a year in local police custody on assault and weapons charges stemming from an incident where two officers were injured. His son, Mohamad Faisal, insists it was all a misunderstanding. Shah Alam, who used a curtain rod as a walking stick, had gotten lost and wandered onto someone's property. When police arrived, he couldn't understand their commands to drop the rod due to the language barrier, leading to his arrest. Body-worn camera footage released by Buffalo police shows Shah Alam repeatedly saying 'sorry' before being tasered and subdued.
Here's where it gets controversial: CBP claims they released Shah Alam after determining he had entered the US as a refugee and couldn't be legally deported. But did they do enough to ensure his safety? Mayor Ryan bluntly stated, 'The Border Patrol officers had no protocol for what to do with a disabled man who doesn't speak English, who is confused and lost. And you know what they did? They dropped him at a closed coffee shop.'
Faisal shared that his father had been eager to return home, looking forward to 'eating home-cooked food' and reuniting with his family, who are Arakan Rohingya refugees fleeing genocide. Instead, his life ended tragically on the streets of Buffalo.
Local officials, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, are now pushing for a full investigation. 'No one who comes here seeking refuge should be left in harm's way,' James stated.
