The aftermath of Tanzania's recent elections has ignited a firestorm of controversy, with the government now seeking the arrest of prominent opposition figures. What exactly happened, and why is it causing such a stir? Let's dive in.
Following the contentious elections last week, Tanzanian authorities are pursuing the arrest of 10 individuals, including high-ranking members of the opposition. The government holds them responsible for the violent protests that erupted, leading to tragic loss of life.
According to the primary opposition party, Chadema, and various human rights organizations, over 1,000 people were killed by security forces during the demonstrations. However, the Tanzanian government disputes these figures, offering no alternative numbers of their own.
Incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner, securing a staggering 98% of the vote. But the opposition, barred from participating in the elections, has vehemently denounced the results as fraudulent. They claim the election was rigged.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the government insists the elections were free and fair, the exclusion of key rivals and reported instances of ballot stuffing have led election observers to question the democratic integrity of the process.
The Tanzanian authorities have announced they are seeking 10 individuals in connection with the unrest, including senior figures within Chadema. Furthermore, prosecutors have already charged 145 people with treason. A police spokesperson stated that they are relentlessly pursuing all those who planned and executed these actions.
Among those wanted for arrest are Chadema's secretary-general, John Mnyika, the party's deputy, Amani Golugwa, and the head of communications, Brenda Rupia.
And this is the part most people miss... The leader of Chadema, Tundu Lissu, who was charged with treason in April, was also barred from running in the elections. His exclusion, along with other political figures, significantly fueled the protests that followed.
Before the elections, Amnesty International reported that Tanzanian authorities engaged in enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings, creating a climate of fear and repression.
Protests erupted on October 29th across Tanzanian cities, resulting in violence and clashes with the police, as stated by authorities. Amnesty International also reported that the government cut off internet access and used excessive force to suppress post-election protests.
Rights groups have also highlighted the government's crackdown on individuals perceived to be associated with the protests, including prominent businesswoman Jenifer Jovin, who was accused of encouraging protesters to buy gas masks.
President Samia acknowledged the deaths but controversially blamed the unrest on foreigners, stating that the arrests were of people from other countries.
Despite the widespread protests, Samia was sworn into office on Monday. The inauguration ceremony, televised but closed to the public, was held at a military parade ground in the capital. She was elected in 2021 and was Tanzania’s first female president. She was initially praised for easing political repression, but now faces accusations of reversing course.
