Tesla Model Y Standard: A Premium Owner's Honest Review
Tesla's latest offering has sparked curiosity, but is it a downgrade or a smart choice?
As a proud owner of the Tesla Model Y Premium, I was intrigued to test drive the new 'Standard' trim, courtesy of Tesla. While a detailed review is on the way, here's a sneak peek at my initial thoughts, focusing on the differences that set it apart from the Premium configuration.
I've been a happy Tesla driver since August, when I traded in my ICE vehicle for the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel-Drive. It's been an incredible journey so far, but I wanted to explore the more affordable Standard trim and see if I could live without some of the Premium's luxurious features.
First Impressions:
Exterior Design:
The absence of the light bar doesn't diminish the Model Y Standard's appeal. Its traditional headlights are aesthetically pleasing, and the overall design remains sleek and modern. The exterior differences are minimal, with the most notable being the missing light bar at the front and rear.
Interior Changes:
This is where the real contrast lies. As a Premium owner, I immediately noticed the absence of certain features. Here's a breakdown:
Storage: The Standard trim lacks the Premium's spacious storage compartment between the cupholders and wireless charger. Instead, it adopts a pass-through and floor storage design, similar to the Cybertruck. While convenient, it's a trade-off I'd need to adjust to.
Materials: The Premium's Vegan Leather seats are a delight, offering a comfortable and temperature-independent experience. The Standard's Textile and Vegan hybrid seats are reminiscent of my previous Bronco Sport, durable and easy to maintain, but a noticeable change.
Sound System: A significant downgrade is evident here. The Standard's 7-speaker system with 1 amp pales in comparison to the Premium's 13-15 speakers, 2 amps, and a subwoofer. The difference in sound quality is hard to ignore.
Cabin Noise: The Premium's exceptional ability to dampen road noise is missing in the Standard. This was a standout feature for me, and its absence is a potential dealbreaker.
The Missing Features:
Ambient Lighting: A small detail, but the Standard lacks the ambient lighting found in the Premium.
Glass Roof: Now, this is a feature I truly miss. Contrary to popular belief, the glass roof is a highlight of the Model Y experience. It offers a unique view, especially during rainy days or when admiring the fall foliage. It's a feature my family and I have come to love.
Final Thoughts:
The Model Y Standard is a more budget-friendly option, but it comes with trade-offs. While the exterior remains appealing, the interior changes and reduced sound quality may be a compromise for those accustomed to the Premium's luxuries.
