Say Goodbye to Free Lyrics on YouTube Music!
In a move that has left many music lovers scratching their heads, YouTube Music has implemented a new policy that requires users to pay for the privilege of viewing song lyrics. While Google has yet to officially confirm this change, the evidence is mounting, with free-tier users sharing screenshots of blocked lyrics on Reddit.
As you can see from the images, YouTube Music is now limiting access to lyrics. Users are only allowed five free views, after which they're left with just the first two lines, the rest blurred out. A clear message appears, urging users to "Unlock lyrics with Premium."

On Spotify, you can now access lyrics with offline downloads, translations are available worldwide, and a new preview window displays two lines of lyrics in the Now Playing tab. And the best part? Basic lyrics access remains completely free for non-paying listeners.
So, why is YouTube Music taking this route? Some speculate that it's a strategic move to encourage more users to upgrade to the Premium subscription. After all, YouTube earned a whopping $60 billion from ads and subscriptions in 2025 alone, as noted by 9to5Google.
